Poll Analysis

WHAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR IN THE STATE OF THE UNION
67% of Adults Want To Cut Government Spending Far Above Tax Cuts Or Reducing Regulations
When President Barack Obama gives his annual State of the Union address tomorrow evening, 67% of the American People (and 75% of political Independents) will be looking for President Obama to talk about cutting government spending, according to the latest nationwide poll conducted by YouGov for the Job Creators Alliance. Conversely, there is relatively little appetite for more stimulus spending (21% of those polled) or new initiatives to protect the environment (26%). While nearly half of those polled stated they want to hear the President advocate for reducing tax rates, when pressed to choose between cutting government spending or reducing taxes, cutting government spending was an overwhelming favorite: 77% to 23%. Among Independents, the divide is even starker: 80%-20%. Reducing regulations on business garnered support from 37% of the public, but when forced to choose between cutting government spending or reducing business regulations, 82% chose cutting spending, as opposed to only 18% for reducing regulation. In addition, the poll found that 75% believed that recent government policies have hurt or had no effect on job creation and 67% said that they were worried about too much regulation, taxes and government spending but judging from their preferences for the Presidents State of the Union, the most important thing theyd like in the new year is less government spending. The poll of a representative sample of 2,004 adults was conducted January 10-11, 2012.
