2011 Spec Market Scorecard

as of March 18

Weʼre at the midpoint of 2011ʻs spring selling season and green shoots just keep
popping up all over the place. Here are the juiciest tidbits about the past monthʼs spec
market:

• No fewer than seven studios bought specs since the last scorecard (!), five of
which hadnʼt gotten on the board yet this year: Disney, DreamWorks, Fox,
Summit and Universal.

• Columbia Pictures leapfrogged Warner Bros. in the last couple of weeks to take
the lead for most spec purchases so far in 2011 (3, to WBʼs 2). That pace is closer
to their 2009 numbers (5) than last yearʼs (1).

• Gersh has the best record among the agencies so far: Theyʼre tied with CAA and
WME for the most spec sales (4), but on fewer attempts, so their efficiency rating is
all the way up at 67%. Last year, the top three at this point in the season were
APA and ICM (3 sales each) and UTA (2).

And hereʼs one more, slightly off-topic but just as encouraging as the above: In addition
to the ten specs the studios have have bought so far this year, theyʼve also bought 10
pitches. If you add those to the mix, Columbiaʼs still in the lead with four new projects,
but Fox and Universal would also be ahead of Warner Bros., with three each.

About The Scoggins Report:
The Scoggins Report is a terribly unscientific analysis of the feature film development
business based on information assembled from a variety of public and non-public
sources. The numbers in the reports are by no means official statistics. For past
editions of the Reports, send an email to archives@itsonthegrid.com. They’ll soon be
available in their beautiful new home on www.thewrap.com.

Details on every person, project and company covered by the Report can also be found
at www.ItsontheGrid.com, the only place mere mortals can find listings of Hollywood’s
active open writing and directing assignments, not to mention comprehensive spec
market data and active film development information. Check out the IOTG Blog, too -- it
includes frequent highlights of recent database updates and individual posts on every
spec that hits the market: http://blog.itsonthegrid.com. You’ll find buttons to subscribe
to the blog’s feed right where you’d expect them, and you can follow the site’s Twitter

About Scoggins:
Jason Scoggins is the brand spanking new Chief Product Officer of www.thewrap.com
and General Manager of www.ItsontheGrid.com, the aforementioned database of
feature film development information he founded. Scoggins also remains the principal
at Eureka Canyon, a literary management company through which he represents
writers, directors and producers for feature films and television.
