Keep Getting Up

W hen I fell down while racing as a skier in the

Paralympics—fell when I was in first place mind you—I got back


up again and still managed to finish third.

By winning that Bronze, I became the first African-American to


win an Olympic or Paralympic medal in ski racing. But more
importantly, I learned the value of getting up faster after you fall
down. The gold medalist had also fallen, but she got up faster and
won!

Despite the Odds

M y adult life has changed dramatically over the past 10

years. I went from a busy wife, mother and CEO of a small


automotive stamping company to that same woman, except with
the complication of kidney failure and secretly doing peritoneal
dialysis. After a kidney transplant, a pancreas transplant and a bout
with the West Nile Virus—all in 3 years, I closed the business and
with some rehab, became a stay at home mom.

What I began to realize was how incredibly blessed I had been, and
