Waite Hill Village

October 10, 2011 Memo to: Subject: Waite Hill Residents My Retirement Plans

I spent the month of August in Maine this summer and had a great deal of time to do some pretty deep thinking about many things, including my personal plans for the future. Originally I had thought that I would probably step aside as Mayor sometime during my next four-year term. I have been at this for 46 years (51 years if you count my time on various Village committees and commissions), and my thought was to step aside after the current Long Range Financial Plan was in place. However, as I had time to slowly and carefully consider all aspects, including my personal life and things I still want to do and see, many involving four daughters and eight grandchildren in four locations in the world and the fact that my 80th birthday is the next one in line, my thinking has been rearranged. My perspective now is that I should accelerate my retirement plans, and this should be to the benefit of Waite Hill. I believe that the implementation of the long range financial plan that is presently being developed by the Councils Finance Committee, when it is endorsed by Council, will be accomplished in several stages over a number of years, partially prompted by the phasing in of our bond retirement obligations. I feel very strongly that there should be continuity between the people who develop this financial plan and those who then carry it out. To allow this to happen, I have decided on an admittedly somewhat awkward course of action. I am on the November ballot as the only candidate for Waite Hill Mayor and anticipate being reelected. I would normally be sworn in at the start of our Council Meeting next January. However, I plan to decline to be sworn in, in which case the person whom Council will have elected as Council President at that meeting will become Mayor. Since the choice should not be made by someone bowing out, I am leaving this decision completely in the hands of Council. It is a good Council, and I am confident the Village will be in very good hands, and the continuity of a single team creating and administering plans for the future will be accomplished. I feel very comfortable with this plan and am looking forward to a wonderful private life with my family. I appreciate the support I have received over these many years and am honored to have been allowed to serve you for so long a period.
